Towards ensuring that people living in riverine areas of Kogi State don't go through the harrowing experience of rescue and evacuation in the hands of armature boat operators ,the Kogi State Government has today presented a cheque of N440,000 to the Kogi State Police Command to repair it boats.
The Police Boats are to complement other boats owned by Government and professionals the State Government has already lined up for the purpose of evacuation and rescue operation towards this year's expected flood.
Aside the money assistance,the Police Command will also be assisted with life Jackets and other marine equipments the police says it will require for the purpose of evacuation and rescue as a result of the expected flood.
Presenting the cheque on behalf of Yomi Awoniyi,the State Deputy Governor and Chairman Flood Management Committee,Air Vice Marshal,Gabriel Abdul RTD,Special Adviser to the State Governor on Emergency Management,said the assistance was to complement other efforts the Police had already put in place towards the expected flood.
AVM Abdul said the concern of the State Government towards tackling the expected flood this year,is aimed at preventing loss of lives and properties as experienced last year.
Twenty five camps,AVM Abdul explained have already been put in place across the nine affected flood prone Local Government Areas of the State to accommodate those that would be internally displaced.
AVM Abdul again used the cheque presentation ceremony to advise all those still living in riverine communities up the stream of Jebba Dam who are yet to heed the warning to relocate to do so and vacate their homes to forestall the unpleasant experiences in the event of the flood.
In his response after receiving the cheque,Bitrus Saleh,Assistant Commissioner of Police and Police Officer in Charge of Operation and Training,thanked the State Government for the assistance and assured that the money would be channeled into making all the Commands Boats functional.
It would be recalled that as a result of inflow of water in the month of September 2013,there are indications of possible flooding that would affect riverine communities in Kogi State especially with the release of excess water stored by the operators of Jebba Dam.
