It was another black day in Lagos as 20 people have been confirmed dead as an Akure-bound plane conveying the body of late former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Agagu crashed in Lagos, Nigeria.
An eye witness disclosed that the crash occurred at the local wing of the airport close to the section were JET-A1, plane fuel, is stored.
Fire service officials have been very busy evacuating dead bodies from the plane. The aircraft is said to belong to the Associated Airline and it crashed shortly after it took off this morning. It was a chartered flight and had passengers who were billed to attend the funeral of Agagu.
The passengers were said to include the former governor’s family members.
Unconfirmed report had it that the son of former Nigeria President, Gbenga Obasanjo, was also on the plane. It was reported that the plane was already 200 feet off the ground before it came crashing within the local wing of the airport.
The plane was said to have suffered engine failure, which led to its crash on the runway before catching fire.
Spokes person of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, Supo Atobatele said the engine of the plane failed on take-off as it crash-landed and burst into flame.
