An agreement that would help Kogi State and its Local authorities to efficiently guide and manage urban development has been signed by the Kogi State Government and UN-Habitat, United Nations Environmental Program Agency.
The signing of the Memoranda of Agreement followed the Memoranda of Understanding signed by the Kogi State Government some weeks back in Kenya,UN Africa headquarters.
The UN-Habit team who had been in the State for a three day scooping mission,visited some towns and cities in the State, culminating into the signing of the agreement.
Yomi Awoniyi,who signed the agreement on behalf of the Kogi State Governor Capt Idris Wada,described the signing as a major event that would mark a paradigm shift in the ways towns and cities are developed in the state.
The Governor noted that the agreement is encapsulated in the transformation agenda of the present administration,said the efforts would take care of the correlation between urbanization,planning and economic growth.
The governor who reiterated the strategic position of lokoja and Kogi State as a hub for industrial and economic development,commended the UN team for their commitment to professionalism and patriotism.
The governor re emphasized the state government's commitment in the partnership to building cities of the administrations dream.
In his opening remarks,the Secretary to Kogi Government,Prof Olugbemiro Jegede,said the UN-Habit visit underscores the importance the present administration attaches to urbanization, called on the people of the State to key into the present administrations program of urbanization.
He described the MoA signed by the administration as one aimed at building a well planned cities,commended the determination of the Capt Wada's administration to urbanization.
In his remarks, Prof. Oyeyinka Oyebanji on behalf of UN-Habitat Deputy Executive Director, Dr. Aisa Kcyira,said the UN-Habitat team was pleased with the state government commitment describing the agreement entered into as the fastest ever by the agency.
He commended Kogi State Government for being one of the first two states in Nigeria that has embraced the need for having a well planned cities.
He assured that the agency would move ahead with the details of agreement signed.
It would be recalled that Lokoja the Kogi State capital was one of the ten cities selected by UN-Habitat for its City Resilience Profiling Programme CRPP. The agreement signed
