ICT firm to deploy high speed Wi-Fi service in Unilorin
The University of Ilorin has perfected plans to ensure that high speed and efficient Wi-Fi internet connection is available in all its campuses.
This was the outcome of a meeting held last Monday (September 9, 2013) between the University’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) team and WaveTek Nigeria Limited, an ICT company. The meeting was chaired by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Y. M. Fakunle.
The University is also considering partnering the company in the areas of virtual fibre deployment to provide internet access to its distant campuses, TV Wide Space technology and green energy solutions to generate clean and efficient electricity supply for the University.
Speaking at the meeting, the team leader and Chief Executive Officer of WaveTek Nigeria Limited, Mr. Kenneth Spann from the United States of America, submitted that the future of Nigeria does not lie in oil and agriculture but in its youth and technology.
Mr. Spann pointed out that Nigeria could be the new world ICT capital after India, stressing that there is nowhere in the world where Nigerian music is not being heard and called for more investment in the youth.
The ICT expert added that the deployment of the technology would bring more revenue into the coffers of the University apart from making Unilorin a reference point for other universities in the country.
Mr. Spann disclosed that his company would help to back up and extend existing ICT facilities in the University.
On the green energy project, the WaveTek CEO explained that electricity can be generated for the University through wind, solar and bio-thermal sources at no cost to the University. This, he noted, would help the University to save cost and time and have clean energy.
Receiving the group earlier in his office, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, expressed the hope that the relationship between the University and the ICT company would be carefully nurtured for the benefit of the University community.
Other officers on the ICT firm’s team were Mr. Mike Olajide, Executive Chairman; Mr. William Obote Uwhojega, Chief Technical Officer and Ms. Nehita Fashe, Assistant General Manager (AGM) Sales.
